The Why Behind Staying Healthy
What Kids Need to Know About Cold & Flu Season
Every year, when the weather gets colder and the days get shorter, something else arrives too: cold and flu season.
And if you’ve ever walked into a school in December, you know… germs spread fast.
We spend a lot of time telling kids what to do:
“Wash your hands!”
“Cover your cough!”
“Eat something healthy!”
“Go to bed on time!”
But kids understand and remember things so much better when we also explain WHY these habits matter.
So today, we’re slowing down and looking at the science and heart behind staying healthy—and why tiny choices have a big impact.
🦠 Why Germs Spread More in Winter
Most kids are surprised to learn that winter actually helps germs spread more easily!
Here’s why:
1. We’re indoors more.
When it’s cold, we cluster inside classrooms, homes, and cars—making it easier for germs to travel.
2. Viruses love cold, dry air.
Dry winter air makes our noses and throats less protected, giving viruses an easier way in.
3. Shared spaces = shared germs.
Kids touch everything—desks, doorknobs, lunch tables—so germs hop from place to place quickly.
Understanding this teaches kids that getting sick isn’t a mistake or something they “did wrong.” It’s simply what happens when germs find the right environment.
🧼 So Why Do Healthy Habits Matter?
Instead of saying “do this,” let’s give kids the why:
- Washing hands removes germs before they can sneak into our bodies.
- Covering our cough helps protect our friends and family.
- Sleep gives our immune system time to recharge and defend us.
- Healthy foods give our bodies the vitamins and energy they need to fight germs.
- Water keeps our body hydrated so germs have a harder time sticking around.
When kids understand the reason behind these habits, they feel empowered!
