How to Talk to Kids about Lockdown Drills
As back-to-school season approaches and we get ready for the new year, a common question is how to talk to kids about why we practice lockdown drills. This topic can be challenging for both parents and educators to address appropriately. Here are some tips:
π Explain the Purpose:
"We practice school lockdowns to make sure everyone knows what to do if there's ever a situation that might be unsafe. It helps us stay prepared and safe."
π Provide Context:
"Sometimes, there are situations where we need to make sure we're safe and secure quickly. Practicing helps us know exactly what to do in those situations."
π¬ Address Their Feelings:
"It's normal to feel a little anxious about these practices, but remember they're just practice. The real goal is to keep everyone safe. If you're feeling worried, it's okay to talk about it."
π£οΈ Encourage Open Dialogue:
"Feel free to ask questions or share how you're feeling about these practices. Your teachers/parents are here to help and support you."
Focusing on safety and preparedness while keeping explanations age-appropriate can help kids feel more secure and understand the importance of these practices.
As a parent of 4th graders, Iβve found it very helpful to know in advance when schools are conducting drills. This allows us to have supportive conversations at home and address any big feelings or fears. Connect with your child's teacher at the start of the year and ask for a heads-up so you can work together.
Remember, it takes a village. π
