Earth Day Is Around the Corner… Let’s Go Beyond the Basics

Earth Day is almost here, and it could not be more important to celebrate — not just with words, but with actions that help the next generation understand how to care for our planet.
Teaching kids to recycle, pick up trash, and turn off lights is a wonderful start… but if we want our kids to truly care for Earth, we have to help them build a relationship with it.
When children feel connected to nature, they naturally want to protect it. Small everyday moments can shape how they see the world — and how they choose to care for it.
Here are unlikely ways to take care of Earth that spark curiosity, empathy, and lifelong stewardship.
Become a Backyard Scientist:
- Encourage kids to observe the tiny details in nature — ants building tunnels, worms improving soil, bees pollinating flowers. When kids understand that even the smallest creatures have an important job, they begin to see Earth as a living system that needs care.
Shop with the Planet in Mind:
- Kids are constantly learning from what we buy. Talk about packaging, waste, and why some choices are better for the planet. Explain that companies design packaging to catch our attention, but we can learn to look beyond the outside and focus on what really matters.
Try this:
At the store, ask:
- Which product has less plastic?
- Which packaging can be reused?
- Why might buying local be helpful for the Earth?
Shopping becomes a real-life lesson in values.
Eat One “Planet-Friendly” Meal a Week:
- Food choices impact the Earth more than most kids realize. Growing food, transporting it, and packaging it all require energy. Try choosing one meal a week that focuses on foods that are kinder to the planet, local vegetables, seasonal fruit, or meals with less packaging.
Learn to Love “Enough”:
- Caring for the Earth also means learning we don’t always need more. Help kids understand the difference between wanting something and needing something. When we buy less, reuse more, and take care of what we already have, we reduce waste and protect resources.
The Bright Littles Leadership Journal helps kids understand that leadership isn’t just about leading people, it’s also about caring for the world around us. When kids learn to respect nature, take responsibility for their actions, and think about how their choices impact others, they begin to see themselves as leaders who can make a real difference.
Through thoughtful prompts and simple activities, kids explore what it means to lead with kindness, responsibility, and courage, whether that means speaking up about protecting animals, helping their community take care of shared spaces, or making small everyday choices that support a healthier planet.
Because leadership starts with understanding that our actions matter — and even the smallest leaders can help create big change. 💛🌱
