5 Simple Ways April Helps Our Family Reconnect

April is one of my favorite times of the year — when we gently shift from cozy winter routines to fresh air, longer days, and more time outside. You can feel the energy change, hear nature coming alive, and see the trees and flowers begin to blossom. The windows open a little more often, shoes get a little dirtier, and we all seem ready for a reset. Spring has definitely sprung at our house, and we take full advantage of the short, cooler season here in Austin. With it come some of our favorite family traditions.
1. ’Tis the season to garden
Every spring we plant a small garden with fresh herbs, veggies, and my personal favorite — strawberries (or as my daughter used to call them, straw babies). She has her own little section to water and take care of, and watching something grow that she helped nurture is such a powerful lesson in patience and responsibility. There’s something magical about kids seeing where food comes from and even more exciting when they can pick it themselves.
2. Dinner refresh
As the weather warms up, our meals start to change too. We move away from hearty soups and cozy pasta dishes and start grilling outside again. From grilled corn to zucchini, everything somehow tastes better on the BBQ. My daughter’s absolute favorite? Grilled peaches with cream, it's a simple, delicious dessert and feels like sunshine on a plate. Eventually, we’ll even be able to grill vegetables straight from our garden, which makes the whole experience even more special.
3. Closet refresh
Out with the old and in with the new. This weekend, my daughter and I are tackling the closet to see what she’s grown out of (which feels like almost everything!). Just like the weeds popping up in the garden, she seems to be growing overnight. Spring is a great reminder that growth is happening all around us, in nature and in our kids.
4. After-dinner walks
Longer days mean more light in the evenings, which makes after-dinner walks possible again. This has become one of my favorite ways to connect with my daughter. It’s a chance for me to step away from the computer, slow down, and give her my full attention. Some of our best conversations happen on these walks. We talk about school, friendships, ideas, worries, and more.
5. Collecting memories, not things
One of our family values is to collect memories through shared experiences. Spring is when we start dreaming about summer adventures, both near and far. This year, we’re planning a road trip to Colorado, just the two of us, with fun stops along the way. She’s helping map the journey and choose destinations, from exploring immersive art at Meow Wolf in Santa Fe to soaking in the hot springs in Pagosa Springs. We even bought a real paper map and are planning it old school style. The process itself has already become a memory.
Spring is such a beautiful time to reconnect with nature, with our kids, and with the simple moments that often mean the most. Getting outside, slowing down, and creating small traditions doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive to be meaningful.
