5 Easy Family Health Habits to Raise a Kind and Healthy Human
As parents, we all want to raise kind, thoughtful, and resilient kids aka not assholes. The good news is there are so many little things we can do to create a healthy home environment—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Small, daily habits can have a lasting impact on your child's well-being and how they interact with the world. Here are five simple family health habits to get you started!
1. Eat Together
Sitting down for meals together isn’t just about nutrition—it’s about connection. Did you know that studies show that kids who eat meals with their family tend to do better in school, have better communication skills, and are more likely to make healthy food choices? We practice this at home, even if it is a busy night and I have to order takeout. We sit together and share the day. Even if it’s just one meal a day, make it a screen-free time and engage with each other.

2. Move & Play
Encourage daily movement as a family. Here are some of our favorite ways to move after-dinner walks, a weekend bike ride, or an impromptu dance party in the kitchen! Physical activity isn’t just good for the body; it also boosts mood and reduces stress. Plus, kids learn by example—when they see us enjoying movement, they’re more likely to embrace an active lifestyle.

3. Practice Gratitude
Teaching gratitude helps our littles to develop a positive mindset and appreciate what they have. Start a simple daily habit like sharing one thing you're grateful for at bedtime or keeping a family gratitude jar. This small practice can make a big impact on your child’s perspective on life.

4. Power of Sleep
A well-rested child is happier, more focused, and better able to manage emotions. Set a consistent bedtime routine that includes reading, winding down without screens, gratitude, and creating a calming environment. We love incorporating sleep-time medications, especially when my daughter is having a hard time falling asleep. When kids understand the value of rest, they grow up prioritizing self-care.

5. Kindness & Service
Being a good human starts with small, daily acts of kindness. Whether it’s holding the door for someone, checking in on a friend, complements, or donating to those in need, involve your child in giving back. When kindness is a family value, it becomes second nature.

Raising a good human doesn’t happen overnight—it’s built through small, intentional habits practiced every day. By eating together, staying active, showing gratitude, prioritizing rest, and modeling kindness, you’re creating a foundation for your child to thrive and make the world a better place.
